Building Your Startup Moat — How Do You Create an Advantage That Lasts?
A moat doesn't appear because a founder decides to have one.
It is built over time.
The strongest moats are usually not a single feature or technology. They are layers of advantages that become stronger as the business grows.
Start with what you already have
Ask yourself:
What are we already building that becomes more valuable over time?
It could be:
Customer Relationships
The longer customers stay, the deeper your understanding and trust become.
Proprietary Data
More usage can generate unique data that helps you improve your product and make better decisions.
Technology & IP
Your technology can become more difficult to replicate as you accumulate expertise, integrations and intellectual property.
Network Effects
More users can make the product more valuable to other users.
Brand & Trust
Consistent delivery over years can create an asset that competitors cannot buy overnight.
Distribution
Strong partnerships, channels or customer access can take significant time to build.
Switching Costs
When your product becomes deeply embedded in a customer's workflow, moving away may become inconvenient or costly.
But here's the important part:
Don't build a moat just because your competitor has one.
Build it around your business model.
For example, a SaaS company may build its moat through data + integrations + switching costs.
A marketplace may depend more on network effects + liquidity + trust.
A consumer brand may build around brand + community + distribution.
A deep-tech startup may rely on technology + IP + specialised expertise.
The real power comes from the combination
Imagine:
More customers → More data → Better product → Better customer experience → More customers
Now the advantage starts reinforcing itself.
That is much stronger than simply having a feature your competitor doesn't have.
A question for founders
Don't ask only:
“What is our moat?”
Ask:
“What are we building today that will become harder to replicate five years from now?”
Because a strong moat is not something you declare.
It is something you compound.
